Even if we aren’t travelling to our favourite destinations abroad this summer, there are still ways to relax, unwind and get the holiday experience at home.
We understand how heart-breaking it can be to have your summer holiday cancelled and miss out on the chance to travel abroad. However, there are still plenty of ways to make the most of summer by enjoying local activities and finding new ways to unwind at home.
Treat your holiday at home like a regular vacation, by preparing ahead and planning your days, even if those plans are to relax! To avoid doing extra chores on your days off, wash your clothes ahead of your holiday and prepare your essentials. Decide when your holiday starts and ends, then commit to relaxing and enjoying yourself on those days so you can truly wind down.
There’s nothing better than going to sleep in fresh, clean bed sheets and it can help us to get a better night’s rest. Before your holiday begins, why not wash your bedding and re-make your bed – you could even pop a chocolate on the pillow for that authentic hotel feel!
If you want to stay comfortable and enjoy a lie in, but require a bit of support, you may benefit from a back rest that will give you support to sit up in bed, or an orthopaedic pillow and pillow lifter to help you to rise and sit in a comfortable position.
Breakfast is always a pleasure when we’re on holiday, so why not create your own buffet style breakfast that be enjoyed on your days off? With an overbed table or bed tray you can have breakfast in bed on a stable surface and really make the most of a lie in. If someone supports you with food shopping, you could discuss the different ingredients or condiments you might need or, if you want to indulge on your days off, you could look at ways to have your breakfast delivered!
For the full hotel-experience, you may even consider keeping a kettle and biscuits on a table in your bedroom, so you can easily enjoy a hot drink when you wake up before getting ready for the day ahead.
More outdoor spaces, such as parks, museum gardens and zoos, are opening to the public, where you can meet loved ones for a picnic or enjoy a day trip away from home. Not only is this a great way to stay physically and mentally healthy, it also provides the ideal opportunity to catch up with family who you may not have seen over the past few months.
If you have difficulty with your balance or find you need support when walking longer distances, you may consider the benefits of a mobility aid. Many walking aids, such as the Compact Easy Rollator or the Folding Wheelchair, are also suitable for travel as they are lightweight and foldable, making them ideal for lifting into the back seat, or boot, of your car. If you are experiencing specific difficulties with your mobility a needs assessment can be requested through your GP practice. Remember that most places require you to book your visit in advance, to avoid overcrowding and enable everyone to safely social distance.
If you’re a lover of the arts and usually enjoy a trip to a museum or theatre, there are ways to enjoy them online. Virtual museum tours are available on many museum websites, where you can move around the rooms and view the paintings and artefacts inside. Some theatre productions are also being posted for free online so people can still enjoy theatre from their own homes. Why not keep it interesting and dress up as you would to go out to the theatre? You could even prepare yourself a cocktail or mocktail at home for the occasion!
Everyone likes to be a bit self-indulgent on holiday so why not enjoy some pamper time on your days off? If you want to enjoy a calming bubble bath, but feel unsteady when getting in and out of the bath tub, you may look at the benefits of a bath lift to help you lower into and lift yourself safely from the bath. Most bath lifts, such as the Aquila Bath Lift, recline so you can fully immerse yourself in some well-deserved “me-time”.
