Commodes

Commodes and commode chairs are types of chairs that have self contained toilets and are designed to aid people with limited mobility.

They provide a convenient way to use the toilet without having to go to the bathroom every time - useful for those who have limited mobility or who are at risk of falling, as it reduces the distance they need to cover in order to relieve themselves.

Anyone who needs to get to the toilet quickly but finds it challenging to get there may benefit from using a commode or commode chair. They're a highly useful aid for people with reduced mobility or are weak or unsteady. If they are at risk of falling, a commode may be safer than attempting to walk to the bathroom. 

There are a number of different commodes and commode chairs available that have been designed with a specific purpose in mind. For instance, wheeled commodes provide assistance with manoeuvring, whilst shower commode chairs can help with cleaning in the shower. 

To use a commode or commode chair first make sure the wheels are locked to prevent the chair from moving. Next, ensure the container is placed or attached underneath the chair. You can put a small amount of water in the container to help clean it. 

There are a few considerations to keep in mind when choosing a commode or commode chair:

• Does it need to be freestanding? 
• Would you need one designed to be used with the help of an attendant? 
• Would you benefit from a tilt-in-space function?
• What environment will it be used in?
• Would you benefit from a combined commode and shower chair to save on space and reduce the number of products needed?

Don't forget to think about what height, width and user weight is required as well.
