Make unlocking doors easier; that was the sole intention of Alan Bellis when he came up with the idea of a small contraption that sits on top of a traditional lock, to help guide a key into a keyhole.
Little did Alan know at the time that he wasn’t about to start inventing a solution that would just aid his own use in low light conditions, he would also be developing a solution for those with dexterity issues, visual loss, mobility issues or tremors.
It started at Alan’s home in Ulverston, which had a porch with lights that could only be switched on from inside the house, meaning he was in complete darkness when outside at night and trying to lock or unlock the door;
“What I could have done was rigged a switch up outside so that I could switch the lights on, but I decided to go a different route. I decided to make something that let me get the key in the door in the dark”.
Alan’s background in developing creative solutions led him to hand-making the first model. This initial concept resulted in an invitation from the Open University for their innovation competition. The prize money from this competition enabled Alan to further develop his invention.
“All the initial prototypes were handmade using plastic parts, sanded to shape and glued together. Each one took several hours and it was very messy process”.
Hand-crafting the prototypes was one thing, but it was another for Alan to learn an entirely new skill set;
“I didn't know anything about creating models in CAD. So that was my next stage of learning, to teach myself how to design things with computer aided design… I wouldn't say it was fun, but it was very rewarding. And very, very difficult, because it wasn’t something I'd ever done before”.
After mastering CAD, Alan went on to use some of his prize money to buy a 3D printer and teach himself how to use it to reproduce his model and maintain the high quality of the design.
Today, the Lockpal is exclusively available through NRS Healthcare and Complete Care Shop, and every product sold is still made by Alan, using his 3D printer on a slow speed, with durable materials, to maintain the high quality that he is so proud of.
Easy to fit without the need for tools, the Lockpal provides maximum convenience and is compatible with standard Euro cylinder locks.
