Cleaning a commode at home

If you or a loved one uses a commode, it’s essential to know how to properly clean it after each use to maintain good hygiene. We’ve created a guide explaining how to clean a commode, how often a commode should be cleaned, and other tips and products we have at Complete Care Shop that could help.

How to clean a commode

Before you start cleaning a commode, make sure you have all of the necessary equipment ready. You may choose to wear disposable gloves and use washing and hygiene aids such as hand sanitiser and wipes when cleaning.

  1. Remove the pan, taking care not to spill anything.
  2. Pour the contents into the toilet before flushing.
  3. Thoroughly wash the commode pan in hot water, mixed with household detergent.
  4. Dry the pan with paper towels. You can also use a detergent spray, as you would to clean a standard toilet. Household bleach is also an option, but it is not recommended as it could discolour a plastic bowl.
  5. Remember to wipe down the seat frame from the top to the legs—don’t forget to clean under the chair arms.
  6. Throw away the disposable gloves and disposable apron if you have one (make sure to get rid of the gloves first).
  7. Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and warm water.

Cleaning commodes isn’t the most enjoyable of jobs, so you might consider using commode liners. They’re disposable and offer a hygienic and convenient way of keeping the pan clean and getting rid of waste. They fit in the commode pan, absorb the waste, and can then be removed and thrown away.

How often should a commode be cleaned?

Ideally, a commode should be thoroughly cleaned after each use to reduce the risk of infection. If using commode liners, you only need to wipe down the commode and replace the liner rather than wash it after every use. However, we recommend thoroughly cleaning it at least a few times a week to maintain good hygiene.
